Sleep: facts and myths

There are many do's and don'ts circulating about sleep, sleep quality, and how to assess and measure sleep. What are these pieces of advice and stories based on? And what is true? Assessing reliability on the internet can sometimes be challenging.

In this session, the scientific background of sleep will be discussed. Using research findings, we will determine which well-known statements and recommendations are labeled as "fact" and which as "myth." We will then provide practical, scientifically-backed advice for assessing and, if necessary, improving your own sleep quality.

Pien Bosschieter is a somnologist (sleep specialist) with a PhD in sleep apnea and has conducted further research on sleep at Stanford University. She currently works as a somnologist at Kempenhaeghe, a center of expertise for sleep medicine, where she treats patients with complex sleep disorders on a daily basis. Additionally, she remains involved with the university for scientific research, currently focusing on new technologies for measuring sleep.
