The well-being of employees in the legal sector is under pressure. Recent studies indicate a high percentage of burnout complaints and other mental health problems among lawyers. In short: the status quo in the legal sector is irrelevant.

The aim of this research is to analyse the status of employee welfare in the legal sector using the vision of the HR staff and also to make recommendations for improvements. What concrete steps can be taken to (better) support employees in the sector?

Preventive support

  • HR facilities: 83% of HR professionals believe that their office offers sufficient facilities for preventive support.
  • Perception difference: There is a gap in perception between HR professionals and employees, with employees often wanting more support.

Individual solutions

  • Wellness solutions: There is broad consensus that individual wellbeing solutions should be standard in the HR strategy.
  • Barriers: However, many employees experience a barrier to actually asking for support.

Investments in health

  • Physical and mental health: The majority believes that more should be invested in health.
  • Current offerings: The current offer is considered insufficient to effectively solve welfare problems.

Pressure of billable hours

  • Influence on well-being: There are mixed opinions about how billable hours affect mental health.
  • Undervaluation: Half of the respondents underestimate the impact of the high number of hours worked on well-being.

Work culture

  • Performance pressure: The work and performance pressure in the legal profession is experienced as high.
  • Burnout factors: Constant availability, lack of appreciation and privacy factors contribute to an increased risk of burnout.

Openness and Destigmatization

There is a need for more openness about well-being and the destigmatization of mental health problems. Office partners play a crucial role in this by leading by example and encouraging employees to make use of wellbeing solutions.
